Our History

From the reclamation of land by the Hangzhou Bay of Jin Shan Wei in 1972 to the sixth phase of the project was completed and put into operation in 2012, the company had mainly experienced the following stages of development.

The first pile of Phase I Project was one of the first national key construction projects to import chemical fiber production equipment and technology from abroad. Phase I was driven into the ground in 1974 and the project was completed and put into operation in 1976 with 18 major plants for the production of ethylene, polyester fibre, PVIA fibre, acrylic fibre and plastics. The completion of this project contributed to the promotion of China’s mastering new technology in petrochemical and synthetic fibre industry, producing on its own petrochemical products, speeding up the development of synthetic fibre industry and resolving the problem of not enough clothing for the people.

The construction of Phase II Project was started in 1980 and completed in 1985. the project includes 10 production plants, adding 200,000 tons of synthetic fibre feedstock to the existing capacity, quite substantially increased the production capacity, and making Shanghai Petrochemical Complex the “Leader”of chemical fiber raw material in China at that time.

The construction of Phase III Project was started in 1987 and fully completed in 1992, primarily including 7 production plants with 300,000 T/Y Ethylene Plant as the key item. The completion of this project turned Shanghai Petrochemical Complex into the largest vertically integrated petrochemical production base in China at that time.

In 1993, the successful completion of joint stock system reform turned the Shanghai Petrochemical Complex to Shanghai Petrochemical Co., Ltd. The joint stock system helped the Company to take the lead in establishment of the basic framework of a modern enterprise system in the China’s petrochemical industry and blaze a new trail for the reform of state-owned enterprise(SOC) conforming to the Chinese reality and with its own characteristics.

The construction of Phase IV Project was commenced in 2000 and fully competed in 2002. this project was characterized by tapping potentials and technical revamping with 700,000 T/Y ethylene expansion project as the core. The completion of this project helped the Company make a significant step forward in its production scale, technical competence, product quality, sales revenue and comprehensive competitiveness.

From 2003 to 2009, the company carried out the construction of Structural Adjustment Project (Phase V Project) with optimizing structure and realizing sustainable development as the theme. This project includes the refining projects such as 3,000,000 T/Y Diesel Hydrogenation Plant and 1,200,000 T/Y Delayed Coking Plant and 150,000 T/Y C5 Fractions Separating Plant, as well as a number of energy-saving and environmental protection projects. With the completion of the Structural Adjustment Project, the company can further optimize its resources utilization and products mix, maintain the comprehensive competitive advantage of being vertically integrated and enhance the competitiveness of the company in aspects of integration of refining and chemical industry.

From 2010 to 2012, the company carried out the construction of Phase VI Project with refining transformation and technological advancement as the theme. This project includes 3,900,000T/Y Residue Oil Hydrogenation Plant, 3,500,000T/Y Catalytic Cracking Plant and other oil refining and gas comprehensive utilization projects and carbon fiber projects and etc. which were mainly constructed. The completion of this project enhance the level of the company in aspects of integration of refining and chemical industry chain and lay a solid foundation for building a ‘leading domestically, first-class globally’ energy, chemical and new material company.
